Examples of My Work
City of Allen – Public Service Announcements (PSAs)
I wrote scripts for events happening in Allen, such as a music concert in honor of Ella Fitzgerald’s 100-year anniversary and a community event to celebrate the beginnings of Allen as a railroad town. Watch the Ella Fitzgerald video at goo.gl/Z9z0ui. Here is the link to the Allen History video: goo.gl/S7XBH1. Enjoy!
City of Allen – Crime Prevention Posts & Tweets
I pulled tips from an interview between the Allen Police Department and a former burglar. To watch the video, go to goo.gl/o0d9j0. I wrangled the tips into Facebook posts, and then into tweets. There are also posts and tweets for general tips on crime prevention. All tips have been scheduled in HootSuite for the City of Allen, so watch for them!
The Agency at Brown Books – Press Release for Alligator Creek by Lottie Guttry
Pride in being an American is never as high as it is on the Fourth of July. As part of The Agency at Brown Books, I created a press release to promote Lottie Guttry’s fiction novel titled Alligator Creek. Set in the Civil War, the novel explores what it means to be a wife, mother or soldier in the America of the time.
The Agency at Brown Books – Book Blog Tour for Ransom’s Voice by Gary Dvorkin
During my internship, I was able to see the book blog tour for Gary Dvorkin’s book, Ransom’s Voice, in every stage of development: sending out pitch emails to bloggers, organizing a list of dates, passing along the press kit for the book, and watching the tour come together at the end. Attached is a post from the blog tour as an example.
Ice Skating Institute – Article for the ISI Edge Trade Journal
When I interned at the Ice Skating Institute, they were going into production for the ISI trade journal. I got the opportunity to write a feature article for their Spring 2016 issue. Flip to page 12 for my article on the St. Louis Park Rec Center.
Ice Skating Institute – Recreational Ice Skating Blog Posts
Many print magazines find themselves needing to go digital to reach their audience, and I was part of the process at the Ice Skating Institute to turn the Recreational Ice Skating magazine into a digital blog. I gathered material from past issues and created blog posts, such as the Stinky Skates checklist (attached).
Austin College Public Affairs – Article for the Alumni Magazine
Flip to page 46 in the magazine for “There’s No Place Like Home.” Alumni from my college started up a sustainable farm not too far from the campus, and Lynn Womble, Public Affairs Director, assigned me to this project and had me sit in on the meetings between the college and the alumni. Before long, I was out at their farm, sharing their table and feeding the chickens. Here is a link to the digital article: https://acmagazine.austincollege.edu/theres-no-place-like-home/.
Austin College Public Affairs – Article on the Sherman Jazz Museum
I have always loved jazz music; I started out as a music major at the University of North Texas. As a writer for the Public Affairs office at Austin College, I had the chance to write about local Sherman businesses and the community. I wrote about the Sherman Jazz Museum in the attached article, a small museum that has a wealth of jazz memorabilia.
The Austin College Observer – Article on a Science Lecture
As a staff writer on the school newspaper, I wrote mainly about events happening on campus. One of the first events that I covered was a lecture by a member of the science faculty. Though I am not a science major or minor, I became interested in his tales of travel, research and discovery. Find more of my articles for The Observer at http://acobserver.com/staff/?writer=Shelby%20Brooks.
The Austin College Observer – Article on the 100th Anniversary of Sherman Hall
I was awarded a glimpse into the world of the college beyond student life. Sherman Hall is one of the oldest buildings on campus, and the anniversary brought many distinguished guests to its lecture hall to celebrate. My article captures the event’s agenda as well as the experience (by yours truly). For more of my articles for The Observer, please visit http://acobserver.com/staff/?writer=Shelby%20Brooks.
